Pre-assembly of Unit 2 Reactor Dry Protection Started at Rooppur NPP

04.03.2020
On March 2, pre-assembly of dry protection (DP), radiation and thermal shield of reactor pit, started at Unit 2 of Rooppur NPP (Bangladesh).
As was mentioned by Head of Energospetsmontazh Branch Office, Mr. Gleb Popov, assembly and subsequent installation of dry protection allows proceeding with important process operations related to the reactor pressure vessel installation, in particular, erection of reactor support truss.
After the completion of welding works, ROSSEM will fill the DP cavities with serpentine concrete and carry out its heat treatment. Upon its completion, the concrete will be tested, including neutron profiling.
All works on the DP pre-assembly, assembly, concreting and heat treatment shall be completed by June 2, 2020 according to the schedule, whereupon its erection will commence.
Dry protection prevents the reactor pit from overheating and acts as a radiation shield. It is located around the reactor pressure vessel and constitutes a metal cylindrical tank filled with serpentine concrete. Equipment weight is 28,570 kg, height is 5,175 mm, and diameter is 6,710 mm. It is manufactured in Syzran, at Tyazhmash factory.

For information:
Rooppur NPP with two VVER-1200 reactors and the total capacity of 2400 MW is being constructed under the Russian design, 160 km from Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, in accordance with General Contract dated December 25, 2015. The General Contractor for Rooppur NPP construction is the Engineering Division of Rosatom.
The Russian design with VVER-1200 reactors was selected for the first NPP in Bangladesh, that was successfully implemented at Unit 1 of Novovoronezh NPP-2. This is an evolutionary 3+ Generation design which fully complies with all international safety requirements. In 2017, the new Russian power unit was named among the three best nuclear power units in the world by the well-known international magazine POWER (USA).
On November 30, 2017, after receipt of the license for power plant design and construction from Bangladesh regulatory authority (BAERA), the main stage of construction of Rooppur NPP Unit 1 commenced - the ceremony of first concrete pouring into the foundation of Unit 1 was held. The active phase of the construction of Rooppur NPP Unit 2 started on July 14, 2018. The works at the main buildings and structures of Unit 1 and Unit 2 are currently in progress.

For reference:

Rosatom State Corporation Engineering Division incorporates the leading companies of the nuclear power industry: ASE EC JSC (Nizhny Novgorod), Atomstroyexport JSC (Moscow), Atomenergoproekt JSC (Moscow), ATOMPROEKT JSC (Saint-Petersburg), etc.

The Engineering Division ranks first in the world by the level of portfolio and the number of NPP under construction overseas. Foreign projects account for about 80% of the portfolio.

The Engineering Division implements design and construction projects for high-power NPPs in Russia and overseas, it renders a full range of EPC, EPC(M) services, including project management and design, and develops Multi-D technologies for management of complex engineering facilities. The Engineering Division draws on the lessons learned from over the 50-year history of the nuclear power industry in Russia and state-of-the-art technologies.

We construct reliable and safe NPPs with III+Gen VVER reactors that are in line with all international requirements and recommendations.
