Russia and Belarus will sign an intergovernmental agreement

The delegation of the Government of Belarus was headed by the First Vice-premier of Belarus, Vladimir Semashko. From the Russian side, the Director General of the State Corporation “Rosatom”, Sergey Kirienko, headed the delegation. The first Vice-president of Joint-Stock Company "Atomstroyexport", Alexander Gluhov, participated in the negotiations of the Russian delegation. Upon the results of the negotiations the parties have agreed to finalize and sign an intergovernmental agreement on peaceful use of nuclear energy between the Russian Federation and Byelorussia in the first quarter of 2009. The First Vice-premier of Byelorussia, Vladimir Semashko, observed that the leaders of the Republic had decided to realize the nuclear power plant construction project in their territory, and Joint-Stock Company “Atomstroyexport” would be the general contractor of the “turnkey” construction. Byelorussia intends to construct the NPP with two water-cooled water-moderated reactors (VVER). The VVER-based NPP design shall be defined as planned within the first quarter of 2009. Under the agreement of the parties, it was stated in the minutes of meeting, that an intergovernmental agreement on NPP construction should be drawn up, approved and signed during the current year.
