NIAEP-ASE has Commissioned LRW Processing Facility on the Kozloduy NPP, Bulgaria

14.12.2012
Facility construction was performed within the International program on decommissioning of the Kozloduy NPP 4 units, financed by European Commission. European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) was the project investor. JSC Atomstroyexport ( JSC ASE) won the tender announced by EBRD and became the General Procurer. The process arrangement of the facility was elaborated by a project Scientific Manager from GUP MosNPO Radon. The following Bulgarian companies took part in the facility creation: AtomToploProekt – a designer, Enemona performed construction and assembly works as well as pre-start activities and tests.
On creation of the facility the following undoubted priorities were set forth: safety, liability, maximal reduction of secondary RW production amount, minimization of personnel irradiation level and adherence to ALARA principle. The facility is controlled from an automated working place of a process operator (AWPPO), located in a remote room, thus providing minimal time of personnel presence in the irradiation zone.
After a complex of tentative, active and operation tests the Customer accepted the facility for operation.
The corresponding act of state commission for works acceptance was signed by the commission that included SE RAW managing bodies, representatives of the Kozloduy NPP Projects Management Group (KPMG), representatives of Kozloduy NPP, those of state supervision bodies of Bulgaria for construction control and nuclear safety.
Georgy Gyoshev, Engineer, Director of Directionate of radioactive waste treatment and decommissioning SE «RAW», confirmed that all the works were performed in accordance with Bulgarian state construction norms, standards and rules in nuclear safety. Equipment and systems are assembled , installed and accepted after a series of tests as per the Customer ' s requirements .
In the course of the facility assembly , specialists of Bulgarian AO Enemon have not fixed any case of personnel irradiation levels increase. The levels were specified for works on the installation assembly in the controlled area. In the words of Tatyana Makarchuk, Deputy Head of Spent Fuel Assembly and Radioactive Waste Treatment, Danube Project Manager, this result was attained due to undoubted priority of safety issues over other project indicators and due to interaction of SE RAW and the Kozloduy NPP specialists in implementation of safety rules during assembly, pre-start activities, tentative, test (active) and operation tests of the facility.
CJSC ASE with a holding company JSC NIAEP and partners will continue collaboration in the facility maintenance during a warranty term which is 36 months.

The purpose of Dunabe installation is to solve the issue of LRW processing, that originate in the course of decommissioning of four units with reactor type VVER-440 Kozloduy NPP. This project also enables to cut radiation risks while liquid waste storing. Liquid low radioactive wastes , that is floor drains, airlock waters and special laundry waters are subjected to processing. The installation output is 1m 3 /hour. The facility starts operating as wastes get stored in the intake tanks that are part of the installation. Minimization factor on Dunabe installation accounts for 0,6-0,7% of the initial RW amount. At that, radionuclide cleanup factor amounts to 1000 and more.
The design life service of the LRW processing facility is 20 years .
