Rostov NPP: It’s great to be a nuclear specialist

30.07.2012
That was the conclusion that the students who worked on the Rostov NPP 3& 4 construction site made after having visited the Rostov NPP training and information centers.
The management of the NIAEP branch in Volgodonsk (the general contractor of the Rostov NPP 3&4 construction project) arranged the visit following a request of the students. There were so many students who wanted to come that the visit lasted two days: 24th and 25th July.
In the Information center the students were shown a nuclear power plant mock-up so they could see what they contributed to the overall amount of construction works carried out on the site. The students unanimously admired the training centre. They had an opportunity to place themselves in the shoes of NPP personnel.
Training centers are available at every operating plant and serve as simulators for NPP staff as they imitate exactly the control room of operating power plants. The plant personnel train their skills and how to act under abnormal conditions.
“At the training center everything looked so real! The display, the panel, shutdown of the reactor, - says Pavel Vorobyev, a member of the students’ team from Zernograd (Rostov region), expressing the overall point of view. – And we learnt a lot of interest at the information center! And we had a wish to continue working at the Rostov plant. The specialists talked about the control room, the power plant and how it operates in a simple way easy for understanding. We are very grateful for this excursion to the organizers!”.
“Students’ work on our construction site has already become a good tradition, - noted Alexander Khazin, head of the Rostov NPP 3&4 construction project and director of NIAEP branch office in Volgodonsk. – The first team of students came to work on the construction site of the second power unit in July 2008. Their number amounted to 60 students. We are happy to see that every year the number is growing and students are coming from more different places. Moreover, these are students from educational institutions related to our work and it is an extra opportunity for them to see what they will deal with in their future job”.
Since 6th July five construction teams have been working on the Rostov NPP construction site – these include 250 senior students from the Volgodonsk Engineering School, the Nizhny Novgorod State Technical University n.a. R.E. Alekseev, the South Russian State Technical University, the Azov and Black Sea State Agricultural Engineering Academy and the Kostroma State Agricultural Academy. Under supervision of tutors the students do the finish of rooms and concreting and carpenter’s works. Besides, they are doing site improvement works.
