Kalinin NPP: power unit N 4 commissioned

On 25 th September 2012 a ceremony of Kalinin NPP-4 commissioning was held (Tver region, Udomlya).
Sergey Kirienko, general director of the State Corporation Rosatom, Andrey Shevelev, Governor of Tver region, Oleg Budagrin, chairman of the board of JSC FSK EES, and Boris Ayuev, chairman of the board of JSC SO EES, participated in the ceremony .
Kalinin NPP-4 is the thirty third power unit in the power grid of Russia . Construction, installation and pre-commissioning works on the Kalinin NPP-4 site are completed. The operating personnel are ready for the commercial operation phase. The final inspection from the state construction supervisory body has been conducted, the Volzhsky interregional territorial nuclear and radiation safety supervision administration has issued a report on conformance of the constructed plant with the requirements of technical regulations (standards and rules), other legal regulations and design documents.
Evgeny Romanov, general director of the company group Rosenergoatom, and Valery Limarenko, director of NIAEP, signed the Acceptance Certificate of the Kalinin NPP-4.
After that Sergey Kirienko, general director of the State Corporation Rosatom, handed over to Mikhail Kanyshev, director of the Kalinin plant, a permit on commercial operation of Kalinin power unit N 4 .
“A long, big and serious piece of work has been completed. Today we are commissioning a fine power unit built thanks to immense self-sacrificing professional work of large teams, says Sergey Kirienko. – The fourth power unit has proven that it is possible to build a power plant on schedule and at cost set with significant saving of RUR 7 bn”.
A number of workers of the Kalinin NPP, the group company Rosenergoatom, JSC NIAEP and subcontractors have been honoured with state and ministerial awards for conscientiously done work and immense personal contribution into the pre-commissioning activities on the site.
The medal of the Order “For merits to the Fatherland” 2 nd class is granted to S.M. Artemyev, an electric welder, JSC Sesam, M.V. Bardukov, a lighting network electrician, JSC Tver enterprise “Gidroelektromontazh”, V.M. Kutzenko, a power line and electric equipment electrician, JSC Tver enterprise “Gidroelektromontazh”, and S.K. Tzagaraev, an I&C installer, JSC Tver enterprise “Gidroelektromontazh”.
The “For merits to nuclear industry” 2 nd class badge has been awarded to Igor Kruuz, Deputy Director – Director of Udomlya Branch, and V.V. Shtro, deputy technical director, “Trust “Rosspetzenergomontazh” . A.M. Chigarev, head of the production and technical department at the Udomlya Branch, has been honored with the “For merits to nuclear industry” 3d class badge .

Kalinin NPP is an affiliated branch of JSC Rosenergoatom. The power plant is located in the north of Tver region in the Udomlya District. Kalinin NPP includes three operating power units with water-cooled power reactors (VVER-1000) of 1000 MW capacity each.
The decision to resume construction of the fourth power unit was made in 2005.
Construction was resumed in 2007 after having obtained a resolution from Glavexpertise and a license from Rostechnadzor.
The Kalinin NPP-4 is the largest investment project in the Tver region, with additional 1000 MW contribution into the power grid of Russia , thus, significantly enhancing the energy security of the country.
On 20 th October 2011 the first fuel assembly was loaded into the reactor – the physical criticality phase was launched at the power unit.
On 8 th November 2011 the reactor plant was brought to minimum controlled power.
On 22 nd November 2011 the plant 4 generator was connected on a trial basis to the grid.
On 24 th November 2011 – launch of the power program.
On 12 th December 2011 the power level of the power unit was raised up to 50% of the nominal power in the presence of Vladimir Putin, chairman of the RF government.
JSC NIAEP (V.I. Limarenko – the Director) is the Prime Construction Contractor for Power Unit N 4.
