21.07.2014
The specialists of JSC NIAEP – JSC ASE jointly with Indian nuclear power engineers completed the full scope of the tests as part of the power testing program of the first unit at Kudankulam NPP. After completion of the tests the unit reached 100% power and then upon the request of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) the unit was shut down to test a number of systems within the time limits set by the regulatory requirements.
Project background: according to the Agreement between USSR and Republic of India on cooperation in construction of a nuclear power plant in India dated November 20th 1988 and Supplement to that Agreement dated June 21st 1998 the Russian Federation renders technical assistance to India in construction of two power units of Kudankulam NPP with VVER-1000 reactors of 1000 MW capacity each (based on the AES-92 project).
The Agreement on construction of power unit 1 and 2 at Kudankulam is implemented by JSC NIAEP – JSC Atomstroyexport on the Russian side and by Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) on the Indian side.
Kudankulam NPP is based on the AES-92 project which fully meets the requirements of the current regulatory and technical documents of the Russian Federation, IAEA and is certified for compliance with EUR, European Utility Requirements for LWR Nuclear Power Plants, applicable to NPPs constructed after the year 2000. The key feature of the project consists in use of hybrid safety systems in addition to the conventional active safety systems.
