River pump plant is put into operation ahead of schedule at Kursk NPP-2 under construction

The river pump plant of Kursk NPP-2 (the general designer and general contractor is Rosatom State Corporation Engineering Division), located on the shore of the Seym river, has been put into operation three months ahead of schedule.

Construction and pre-commissioning works were performed by specialists of stand-alone subdivision of NIKIMT-Atomstroy JSC Directorate at Kursk NPP-2 facilities. The accelerated pace of activities was caused by a necessity to start up the plant during the flood period, which would prevent the Seym from shallowing and save the environmental balance in the basin of the river.

The river pump plant fills the storage pond serving as a source of water for demineralization shop, from which neutral water, being the main NPP coolant, is supplied to the first circuit of the reactor compartment. The plant consists of four pumps, each capable of pumping 12.6 thousand cubic meters of water per hour. In total, it is required to pump about 1 million cubic meters of water to fill the storage pond.

“Ahead-of-schedule start-up of the pump plant is not only another evidence of efficient operation of companies being a part of Rosatom’s Engineering Division, but it also proves our attention to solution of environmental issues arising in the course of construction of such a large-scale facility as the NPP”, noted Oleg Sperle, Vice President of ASE JSC – Project Director for Kursk NPP-2 Construction.
