Engineering survey starts at BN-1200M, the first fast breeder unit in the world at Beloyarsk NPP site

05.04.2023

Engineering survey which will provide the basis for justification of investment (JoI) for the construction of BN-1200М, the first fast breeder unit in the world, has started at the site of Beloyarsk NPP.

During the survey, geodetic, geological, hydro-meteorological and environmental characteristics of the site will be specified. The engineering survey is being performed by specialists of Orgenergostroy JSC that has won the tender announced in the end of 2022 by Atomenergoproekt JSC, the general designer of Beloyarsk NPP Unit 5 (a part of Rosatom State Corporation Engineering Division).

“The subcontractor will study the man-made conditions, analyze the aviation-related environment, evaluate suitability of the site for potential location of the power unit in terms of water management conditions and carry out a range of other surveys. We will use the results when elaborating the JoI”, explained Aleksandr Andreev, Deputy Director of Proryv Responsibility Center and Design Director of Atomenergoproekt JSC.

According to the contract terms and conditions, the engineering survey at the site of Beloyarsk NPP Unit 5 shall be completed in May. It is planned that JoI elaboration and approval will be finished in December of the current year. The customer of works is Rosenergoatom.

The design BN-1200М of Beloyarsk NPP Unit 5 envisages construction of a sodium-cooled fast breeder reactor. It is an evolutionary design in the development of BN line. Currently, Unit 3 equipped with BN-600 reactor and Unit 4 with BN-800 reactor are being operated at the Beloyarsk NPP site.

BN-1200M is a reactor of safety GEN IV. Its design rules out man-made accidents owing to the use of passive safety systems based on natural principles. Design solutions adopted for BN-1200M ensure its competitive advantage in terms of capital expenses as compared with VVER reactors of equivalent power.
