In his opinion, construction of the nuclear power plant will contribute to urban development, ensure investment inflow, create new employment for the townspeople, make Belene successful both socially and economically.
Belene NPP construction is the largest project in the economy of Bulgaria. Construction of the Russian – Bulgarian nuclear power plant will make possible for Bulgaria to preserve status of the energy donor of the European Union, and to implement in future a qualitative breakthrough to the promising Asian energy market.
About the project:In 2005 bids for Belene NPP construction were invited, and Russian Joint – Stock Company Atomstroyexport was announced a successful bidder. On January 18, 2008 the Contract Agreement for Belene NPP construction between Atomstroyexport JSC and National Electric Company of Bulgaria was signed in the presence of President of Russia, Mr. Vladimir Putin, and President of Bulgaria, Mr. Georgy Pyrvanov. The cost of works under the Contract makes up about 4 billion Euro. The design offered by Atomstroyexport JSC left the competitors behind due to a higher level of safety, increased service life of the main equipment (to 60 years), higher capacity factor (to 90 %).
In 2007 the Russian design was recognized as meeting all EUR technical requirements for new generation light-water reactor NPP. Design certification demonstrated once again a high level of reliability and safety of the future nuclear power plant. Official opening of Belene NPP Site took place on September 3, 2008. Atomstroyexport JSC is implementing Belene NPP construction under “turnkey” conditions, i.e. on conditions of full responsibility of the General Contractor.
