On the 31st of January 2012 a routine meeting of Baltic NPP Unit 1 (Neman District of Kaliningrad Region) construction control panel was held on plant site, during which the results of works were reviewed. “The construction control panel’s meeting is a time-proven way to coordinate all project participants”, Valery Limarenko, JSC NIAEP, said in his opening word, “Monthly project review meetings help us as the general contractor to see clearly at what point each project participant is and what steps should be taken to optimize power plant construction”. Yevgeny Vlasenko, Director of Rosenergoatom branch –Directorate of Baltic Nuclear Power Plant under Construction, Sergey Buchelnikov, Director General of JSC Baltic NPP, SPb AEP representatives and subcontractors, engaged in the plant construction, attended the meeting. “2011 plan was completely fulfilled (102%)”, says Vyacheslav Makhonin, Director of JSC NIAEP Baltic Branch, “The construction site is prepared for 2012 full-scale construction works”. Vyacheslav Makhonin presented to the attendees the approved 2012 Unit 1 construction plan. The plan contains clear construction schedules of both major facilities, which include turbine and reactor buildings, and auxiliary and support facilities. Cost of construction works to be done in 2012 will amount to over RUR 6,3 bn. Due to an increase in work volume by nearly three times, recruitment of construction workers continues. By the end of the first quarter the headcount will be 1,500 people, and by the end of the year it will go up to 2,500 people. Today the main task for subcontractors is to hire high-skilled staff. Bidding lots of construction and installation works and equipment are being prepared and placed on the electronic trading platform of Rosatom where tenders are held. Representatives of companies, involved in the NPP construction, reported on their work progress at priority facilities and on how this work was organized in this freezing weather. All measures are provided to avoid degradation of quality of the construction and installation works, to maintain correct operation of the machinery and to supply heating and hot meals for the workers. “There is no doubt that the first quarter plan will be fulfilled,” Valery Limarenko, JSC NIAEP Director, assured the attendees. At the present time, 631 persons are engaged in Baltic NPP construction; of them 525 persons are residents of Kaliningrad Region. The ground for Baltic nuclear power plant was broken on 25th February, 2010, in Neman District of Kaliningrad Region. It is based on AES-2006 project and will consist of 2 power unit of overall capacity in 2300 MW. Unit N 1 is to be commissioned in 2016, unit N 2 – in 2018. The plant will supply electric power to Kaliningrad Region and abroad.
