First Kudankulam Power Unit Connected to Grid

The first power unit at Kudankulam NPP was connected to the grid of India on 07.12.2014, after the repair of the turbogenerator had been completed.
By now the electric load has reached 750 MW, the scheduled rise of the power unit to the nominal capacity level is under way.
All the systems of the power unit are in design-based operation.

The power start-up of power unit No. 1 of the Kudankulam NPP first phase took place on October 22nd 2013. After successful completion of power rise to 100% capacity level, the scheduled preventive maintenance was carried out at the power unit, and after completion of pre-commissioning operations power unit No. 1 was re-connected to the grid of India on 12.07.2014.

According to the Agreement on cooperation in NPP construction in India between USSR and Republic of India dtd. November 20th 1988 and Supplement to the Agreement dtd. June 21st 1998 the Russian Federation provides technical assistance for India with regard to construction of two Kudankulam power units with VVER-1000 reactors of 1000 MW capacity each (AES-92 project-based).
ZAO Atomstroyexport (ZAO ASE) implements the agreement on construction of Kudankulam power units No. 1 and 2 on behalf of the Russian party. Starting from 2012 – it’s the merged company NIAEP – ASE.
On behalf of the Indian party the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) is in charge of the construction project.
The responsibility scope of the merged company covers: development of design, commissioning and operational documentation, supply of equipment and materials, technical support during NPP construction, installation and commissioning including training of Indian staff.
The responsibility scope of NPCIL includes: clearance at the regulatory authority for all the NPP construction stages, construction, installation and pre-commissioning activities, NPP commissioning and NPP construction schedule management.

The merged company JSC NIAEP – CJSC Atomstroyexport is a leader in the nuclear engineering business and covers 30 % of the NPP construction global market. In October 2014 JSC NIAEP was made the sole executive body of JSC Atomenergoproekt.
The representative and front offices of the Company carry out operations in 15 countries worldwide, almost 80% of the orders of the company include overseas projects.
Furthermore, the company carries out radioactive waste and spent fuel management projects and heat power engineering projects and also provides the complete range of EPC, EPC(m) and PMC services for any complex engineering projects. The merged company develops and actively implements an innovative management system for complex construction projects - Multi-D, which enables to manage more effectively such parameters as: schedule, quality and budget.
