Kudankulam NPP Unit 2 is connected to the power system of India

31.08.2016
«Connection of the power unit to the grid was carried out in the normal operation mode, - Andrey Lebedev, Vice-president for projects in South Asia of ASE Group of Companies, stated. – According to the commissioning program, all stages of the reactor facility low power test have been completed, the design parameters of the systems and equipment have been validated».

Further on, the stage for carrying out of the unit transient stability tests start at different levels of the electric load, with the follow-up 100% load operation. After their completion, 72-hour rated power tests will be carried out, upon the results of which the provisional acceptance certificate for Kudankulam NPP Unit 2 will be signed by the Indian customer.

In the opinion of Manager of ASE Group of Companies, Valery Limarenko, successful connection of Kudankulam NPP Unit 2 to the grid is just another evidence of competencies of ASE Group of Companies in the sphere of erection of state-of-the-art nuclear power plants. «In the course of preparation to this operation, a huge scope of works on erection, adjustment of the equipment has been executed. The fact that connection was carried out in the normal operation mode proves that all the works had been executed at high level. The equipment is safely operating», - Valery Limarenko stressed. The Manager of ASE Group of Companies also highlighted that Kudankulam NPP Unit 1 has been steadily operated at the design power level of 1 thousand MW since February, 2016, and consistently provides power supply of the population in the south of India.

For reference:
Commencement of the physical start-up of Unit 2 was on May 11, 2016, when after execution of all preliminary works the first fuel assembly (FA) was mounted in the reactor. Totally 163 FAs were loaded in the reactor. All the works have been executed jointly by the Russian and Indian experts in the automatic operation mode, in exact compliance with the schedule and observance of the safety standards. The permit for loading was obtained from the supervisory authority of India (AЕRB) after the detailed consideration of all the Safety Reports, which have been prepared before. On May 19, 2016 loading of fresh fuel in the reactor of Kudankulam NPP Unit 2 was successfully completed. The works have been completed in full scope in the automated mode within the period of less than 7 days, 4 days ahead of schedule, as compared to the established schedule. Then fuel loading monitoring was carried out by IAEA inspectors, after that the works on the reactor compaction were executed. On 28.06.2016 the permit for reaching the MCRP was obtained from AERB, the Indian regulatory authority. On July 10, 2016 the power unit reached the Minimum Controlled Reactor Power (MCRP).

The design of Atomenergoproekt JSC with WWER-1000 MW power units was accepted as a basis for construction of Kudankulam NPP, which completely meets the requirements of up-dated regulatory technical documents of Russia, IAEA and is certified for compliance with the requirements of the European Unitary Regulators (EUR) Club.
Kudankulam NPP is being erected in Tamil Nadu state in India within the framework of the Russian-Indian Agreement dt. 20.11.1988 and Supplement hereto dt. 21.06.1998.
General designer is Atomenergoproekt JSC. Technical assistance is rendered by Atomstroyexport JSC (a member of ASE Group of Companies). The Customer is Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL).
Currently the works on the design of Kudankulam NPP Units 3&4 are in progress. ASE JSC has started deliveries of the design documentation, as well as equipment and materials. The Customer is executing earthworks on the NPP site, the scheduled deadline for first concrete pouring is March, 2017.
