First Seminar of the WNA Licensing Work Group in Moscow

28.10.2016
A seminar “Technical and Regulatory challenges facing nuclear power plants. Global experience” was held in Moscow office of ASE group (a company of Rosatom) on 25-26 October. The seminar was organized by CORDEL (Cooperation in Reactor Design Evalution and Licensing), a work group of the World Nuclear Association (WNA). The seminar participants were the representatives of world leading nuclear organizations, including regulatory authorities, operators and engineering companies.

Mikhail Miroshnichenko, Head of the 5th NPP Radiation Safety Department of Rostehnadzor, Helmut Engelbrecht, WNA Chairman, Leos Tomicek, Vice President of Rusatom Overseas Inc., and Igor Timofeev, Vice President for Project Management of ASE group addressed the seminar participants and guests with their welcome speeches.

At the seminar the leading world vendors, developers and manufactures of reactor equipment shared best world practices, discussed global challenges facing the nuclear power industry, and also new NPP construction prospects. The seminar provided the platform for interrelation strengthening within the nuclear industry, between supervisory and regulatory experts and managers of leading international companies.
“Licensing is fundamental in the nuclear industry, while such events open up an opportunity to study the best world practices. So, at the seminar we could see the Russian Multi-D system that is an innovation solution in NPP life cycle management”, said Andrew Wasylyk, the WNA representative.
“It is with good reason that VVER is considered as one of the most safety and reliable reactors in the world. The first VVER-type reactor was commissioned in 1964 at Novovoronezh NPP. Since then, the VVER design range has been considerably improved. Unit six at Novovoronezh NPP commissioned in August this year is the only Gen 3+ reactor that has been successfully brought online. This next evolution stage of reactor technology has strengthened Russia’s leadership in NPP design and construction. Gen 3+ is the technology of the future”, noted Leos Tomicek, Vice President of Rusatom Overseas Inc.

The representatives of the companies from 5 countries, including Rusatom Oversease Inc., ASE group, CEZ (Czech Energy Plants), EDF (Electricite de France), FORTUM, and international organizations such as the WANO, IAEA, as well as Akkuyu Nuclear, JSC, Afrikantov OKBM, Proryv, etc., made their speeches at seven sessions of the seminar.

Background

Rusatom Overseas Inc., JSC, is a company of Rosatom, whose scope of responsibilities includes the promotion of the integrated NPP construction offer on foreign markets. The company organized the seminar from the Russian side.

АSE group was established as part of Rosatom’s engineering division and consists of four leading companies of the industry: NIAEP, ASE, Atomenergoprojekt, Atomprojekt. АSE group is one of the world nuclear engineering leaders with 30% share on the global market of NPP construction.
Representative and operaton offices of ASE group function in 15 countries. Foreign project share of ASE’s portfolio is 80%.
In addition, ASE constructs facilities intended for radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel, and also implements facility construction projects in the thermal power industry. The company also provides the full range of EPC, EPC(M) and PMC services for engineering facilities of any complexity level. АSE group being a developer actively introduces the Multi-D system, which is the innovation management system intended for construction of complex engineering facilities. This system provides for more efficient management of such project elements as budget, schedule, and quality. Valery Limarenko, Doctor of Economics, is the current President of ASE group.
