Concreting of the first layer of reactor compartment internal containment is completed at Unit 1 of Rooppur NPP

25.10.2019
Concreting of the first layer of reactor compartment internal containment (IC) has been completed at Unit 1 of Rooppur NPP (General Contractor is Rosatom State Corporation Engineering Division) being constructed in Bangladesh under the Russian design.

“This is one of the milestones for 2019 at the construction site of Unit 1. We completed the works on concreting of the first IC layer, the reactor building ‘grew’ to the elevation +6 meters, 1145 cubic meters of concrete was laid”, informed Mr. Yuri Koshelev, Deputy Director for Project Management of ASE JSC Branch Office in the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Chief Project Engineer.

Internal containment is an essential element of the power unit, ensuring nuclear and environmental safety of the facility. After completion, it will be a cylindrical reinforced concrete structure with a semi-spherical dome, inside of which the nuclear reactor and first circuit equipment of the NPP will be located. In case of emergencies at the NPP, the IC will prevent a release of radioactive substances into the environment.

In 2020, it is planned to proceed with installation of the main equipment of Unit 1 reactor compartment.

Rooppur NPP with two VVER-1200 reactors and the total capacity of 2400 MW is being constructed under the Russian design, 160 km from Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, in accordance with General Contract dated 25 December 2015. The General Contractor for Rooppur NPP construction is the Engineering Division of Rosatom.

The Russian design with VVER-1200 reactors was selected for the first NPP in Bangladesh, that was successfully implemented at Unit 1 of Novovoronezh NPP-2. This is an evolutionary GenIII+ design which fully complies with all international safety requirements. In 2017, the new Russian power unit was named among the three best nuclear power units in the world by the well-known international magazine POWER (USA).

On November 30, 2017, after receipt of the license for power plant design and construction from Bangladesh regulatory authority (BAERA), the main stage of construction of Rooppur NPP Unit 1 commenced — the ceremony of first concrete pouring into the foundation of Unit 1 was held. The active phase of the construction of Rooppur NPP Unit 2 started on July 14, 2018. The works at the main buildings and structures of Unit 1 and Unit 2 are currently in progress.
