Welding of the main circulation pipeline has begun at Rooppur NPP power unit No. 1

15.12.2021
The construction of Power Unit 1 at the Rooppur NPP in the People's Republic of Bangladesh (its general designer and general contractor being the Engineering Division of the Rosatom State Corporation) has proceeded to one of the key milestones, i.e. welding of the main circulation pipeline (MCP).
The main circulation pipeline (its diameter being 850 mm, wall thickness being 70 mm, total length being over 160 meters) connects the main equipment of the primary circuit, such as the reactor, the steam generators and the main circulation pumps. This pipeline is designed to ensure circulation of the coolant, i.e. 350° C water under the 17.6 MPa pressure.
“The MCP welding is one of the key operations in the construction of the power unit. It is in the focus of special attention, since the safety and efficiency of the power unit operation depends on quality of the MCP welded joints” said Aleksey Deriy, ASE JSC Vice President - Director of the Rooppur NPP Construction Project.
The Energospetsmontazh JSC specialists will have to assemble 260 tons of pipelines and metal structures, connect by manual welding 28 pipeline joints to the main equipment of the reactor plant.
Very stringent requirements are imposed on the MPC welded joints. As part of the welding works, specialists of the general contractor and the customer will conduct step-by-step supervision of all operations performed, including visual, measuring, radiographic, penetration and ultrasonic tests.
The Rooppur NPP equipped with two VVER-1200 reactors of the total 2400 MW capacity is being constructed under the Russian design in 160 km from Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, in accordance with General Contract dated December 25, 2015. The Russian design with VVER-1200 reactors was selected for the first NPP in Bangladesh, that was successfully implemented at two units of Novovoronezh NPP. This is an evolutionary Generation III+ design which fully complies with all international safety requirements.
