Rosatom takes part in the International Book Fair in Cairo

01.07.2021

Cairo, Egypt, 30 June 2021 – Rosatom will present two books at the Cairo International Book Fair, to be held from June 30 to July 15, 2021. The company oversees Egypt’s El-Dabaa NPP project.

The book “Nuclear ABC” relates the basics of nuclear physics, atoms and atomic energy, radiation, nuclear reactor design, and the principles of operating nuclear power plants to children in simple and accessible terms.

The book “Nuclear Professions” describes the variety of professions in the nuclear industry and their contribution to societal development and environmental conservation. This book informs students exploring their professional futures about in-demand nuclear technology-related career paths in a wide range of areas, from power generation to medicine to agriculture to archeology, amongst others.

“Rosatom pays particular attention to working with the populations of the countries of its presence. It is a great honour for us to partake in the oldest international book fair in the Arab-speaking world, a fair with an established reputation amongst both book lovers and publishing professionals. We hope that our books will help expand local knowledge about the role of nuclear energy in [Egypt’s] development and will open new professional horizons for Egyptian schoolchildren and young people in the nuclear industry,” said JSC ASE Vice-President and El-Dabaa NPP Project Director Grigory Sosnin.

Rosatom is participating in the Cairo International Book Fair in cooperation with the Kotobna publishing house, whose stand will feature both books. Kotobna’s stand (number B21) is located in Hall 1.

About Rosatom

Rosatom is a diversified holding that unites assets in the energy sector, the mechanical engineering industry, and the construction industry. Its objective is to develop low-carbon sources of energy, including wind energy. Rosatom is Russia’s national leader in electricity generation (producing over 20% of the country’s total power) and ranks first in the world in terms of portfolio of foreign projects, with 35 power units at different stages of implementation in 12 countries. Rosatom is the only company in the world that has competencies in the entire technological chain of the nuclear fuel cycle, from natural uranium mining to the final stages of a nuclear facility’s lifespan. The scope of Rosatom’s activity also extends to scientific research, the development of the Northern Sea Route, the development of various innovative products, both nuclear and non-nuclear, and environmental projects, including the creation of eco-technology parks and a state system for handling hazardous industrial waste. Rosatom employs over 260,000 people in more than 400 enterprises and organisations, including the world’s only nuclear-powered icebreaker fleet and the unique floating power unit Akademik Lomonosov.

Rosatom is overseeing the implementation of Egypt’s first nuclear power plant, the El-Dabaa project. Located in the province of Matrouh, the plant will feature four power units with Russian-designed VVER-1200 reactors and have a unique combination of active and passive safety systems, making Egypt the only country in Africa to operate generation 3+ reactors. Currently, there are four VVER-1200 power units successfully operating in Russia: two at Novovoronezh NPP and two at Leningrad NPP. Outside of Russia, one VVER-1200 reactor-equipped power unit was connected to the grid in November 2020 at the Belarusian NPP.
