Scientific and Technical Council of the Engineering Division discussed the implementation of international program of evaluation of new NPP designs

10.07.2023
Participation of Russian companies in the implementation of multi-national program of evaluation of new NPP designs was discussed at the meeting of Unified Scientific and Technical Council (USTC) of ASE JSC.

The meeting was attended by representatives of FBI SEC NRS, ASE JSC, Atomenergoproekt JSC, RASU JSC, Rusatom Energy Projects JSC, Rosenergoatom JSC, Rostechnadzor, OKB GIDROPRESS JCS.

The event was dedicated to the discussion of the results of the fifth international conference of Multinational Design Evaluation Programme, https://oecd-nea.org/mdep ), which took place in Turkey in April 2023.

The conference was attended by over 100 representatives of regulatory authorities and large companies from 19 countries, including Russia.
Sergey Bogdan, Deputy Director of FBI SEC NRS, mentioned that MDEP working group for assessment of new VVER designs includes representatives of FBI SEC NRS (Russia), Rostechnadzor (Russia), Nuclear Regulatory Authority of Turkey (Nükleer Düzenleme Kurumu, NDK), National Nuclear Safety Administration (NNSA) of China, Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority (HAEA). He summarized the main results of MDEP and the working group’s activities for more than 15 years of the multinational program implementation, outlined the prospects for its development and presented the current MDEP structure, the management board of which is now headed by Alexei Ferapontov, Deputy Head of Rostechnadzor, jointly with Abel Julio González, Senior Advisor to the Autoridad Regulatoria Nuclear (ARN) of Argentina.

Sergey Egorov, Director of Science and Innovations of Atomenergoproekt JSC, Chairman of USTC of ASE JSC, provided information about the preferences that the Russian industry is getting from the activities of the program and the working group. According Mr. Egorov, MDEP is an excellent “platform for non-procedural communication” when it is necessary to explain a design solution and its implementation to the Customer and to ensure its compliance with the standards established in the IAEA recommendations and the requirements of the state regulatory authority, using cross-cultural communication.

“The authority of the MDEP format will undoubtedly influence the decision-making about the construction of NPPs in newcomer countries and expansion of construction in the countries developing nuclear power, accordingly, any participation in such a format is important for promotion of domestic technologies on the global market,” says Sergey Egorov.
