On March 18, the first athletics race, arranged by the Engineering Division with assistance of Atom-Sport ANCO, took place at the construction site of El-Dabaa NPP (the Arab Republic of Egypt, the general designer and general contractor is Rosatom State Corporation Engineering Division). The competition was held in Sun City, the residential camp for construction workers at the nuclear power plant, under the auspices of running community El-Dabaa Running.

The visitors and participants of the sports day were greeted by Natalia Shafalovich, ASE JSC Vice President for HR and Internal Communications, Grigory Sosnin, ASE JSC Vice President - Director of El-Dabaa NPP Construction Project, Svetlana Petrachina, Executive Director of Atom-Sport ANCO and the World Champion in the artistic swimming, and Dr. Mohammed Dwiddar, El-Dabaa NPP Project Manager of NPPA.

The runners were over 170 people representing Russian companies and South Korean enterprises Korean Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. Ltd. (KHNP) and Doosan group, as well as the Nuclear Power Plants Authority of Egypt (NPPA).

“Today was the day of the queen of sports, athletics. I am glad it has united different nationalities, ages, male and female. Initially, there were applications for participation from 150 people but more than 170 attended the race, which was a great pleasure for us. It shows that the employees of the El-Dabaa NPP construction site are fond of sports”, noted Natalia Shafalovich.

The athletes competed at four distances: 100 meters (children under 7), 300 meters (children above 7), 2,000 meters (women), 3,000 meters (men). In addition, there was a medley relay 4х300 meters.

Among men, a representative of Fensma company was the fastest to complete the 3 km distance; among women, the fastest one was an employee of TITAN-2. The medley relay was also won by Fensma’s representatives.

For reference:

The El-Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant is the first nuclear power plant in Egypt. It will be constructed in the city of El-Dabaa, Matrouh Governorate, on the Mediterranean coast, roughly 300 km north-west of Cairo. The NPP will consist of 4 units with a generating capacity equivalent to 1200 MW per unit using generation III+ VVER-1200 reactors (pressurized water reactors). This is the most advanced technology to date, already having references, being successfully operated. There are four operating units equipped with such reactors in Russia: two reactors at each of the sites of the Novovoronezh and Leningrad nuclear power plants. Outside of Russia, a VVER-1200 reactor based power unit was connected to the grid at the Belarusian nuclear power plant in November 2020.

The El-Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant is being constructed according to the package of contracts that became effective on December 11, 2017. Pursuant to the relevant contractual obligations, the Russian party will build the NPP, deliver Russian nuclear fuel for its entire lifecycle, provide assistance to the Egyptian partners in personnel training, and provide support in the operation and servicing of the NPP for the first 10 years of its operation. Within the framework of another agreement, the Russian party will also build a special storage facility and deliver casks for storing spent nuclear fuel.

The RF Government, in partnership with large Russian companies, is paying considerable attention to the development of international trade and economic, as well as social relations. The Engineering Division is consistently implementing the program of development for the countries of operation, facilitating improvement of the civil infrastructure and creating a condoning attitude towards the nuclear power, supporting various competitions and events aimed at promotion of sports and development of the available sports environment.
