A transport lock that is a part of nuclear fuel handling equipment at a nuclear power plant has been delivered to the construction site of Rooppur NPP Unit 2 in the People’s Republic of Bangladesh (the general designer and general contractor is Rosatom State Corporation Engineering Division).
In the short run, the construction workers will have to perform a highly accurate and the most labor-intensive work during construction of the power unit: installation of the lock and its erection in the reactor building.
“Implementation of Rooppur NPP project goes on, both as regards construction of the units and supply of equipment, its installation, start-up and adjustment works. This allows us to speak with certainty that Rosatom efficiently fulfills the responsibility undertaken towards its partner and guarantees reliability and safety of its technologies for the well-being of generations to come”, noted Alexey Deriy, ASE JSC Vice President for Projects in Bangladesh.
The transport lock, being an important part of the reactor compartment, is a cylindrical vessel with two covers – curtains on the side of the containment and non-containment areas. The lock as an assembly weighs 235 tons, its length is 12.7 m and the diameter is 10 m. The main function of transport lock is to ensure retention of radioactive substances in the containment, as well as fire protection. During normal operation of NPP, the transport lock carries out transportation of cargoes to the reactor plant maintenance level for equipment repair, intake of fresh fuel and removal of spent fuel.
Rooppur NPP equipped with two VVER-1200 reactors with the total capacity of 2,400 MW is being built according to the Russian design 160 km from Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, in compliance with the General Contract dated December 25, 2015. The Russian design with VVER-1200 reactors that had been successfully implemented at two units of Novovoronezh NPP was selected for the first NPP in Bangladesh. This is an evolutionary Generation III+ design which fully complies with all the international safety requirements.
