The cold run of one of three diesel generator units has been completed at the Rooppur NPP Unit 1 (the Rosatom State Corporation Engineering Division being the general designer and general contractor). The procedure was carried out in two stages: first, the diesel generator was started using the compressed air to check the operability of all systems. Next, fuel was supplied to the unit for the no-load start.
The diesel generator units are the most important element of the NPP safety system. They provide standby power supply for the equipment, the operation of which is necessary to stop the reactor. The height of the unit is 5.5 meters, the length is 13 meters, the rated electric power is 6.3 MW, the weight is 185 tons.
"Diesel generator units are the heartbeat of standby diesel-generator stations, which are part of the nuclear power plant safety system. Before starting the power unit, all its systems undergo close quality control and operation testing, this is a mandatory process at the commissioning stage. The life cycle of Russian NPPs is more than 100 years, and we guarantee the reliability and safety of our technologies," said Alexey Deriy, Atomstroyexport JSC Vice President for Projects in the People's Republic of Bangladesh.
Rooppur NPP equipped with two VVER-1200 reactors of the total 2400 MW capacity is being constructed under the Russian design 160 km from Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, in accordance with General Contract dated December 25, 2015. The Russian design with VVER-1200 reactors that had been successfully implemented at two units of Novovoronezh NPP was selected for the first NPP in Bangladesh. This is an evolutionary Generation III+ design which fully complies with all the international safety requirements.
