Waste soil removal from construction site of Unit 5, Beloyarsk NPP completed

03.04.2026
One of the key stages of site preparation for the main construction period of Unit 5 featuring BN-1200M reactor - start of waste soil removal - was launched by Alexey Likhachev, Director General of State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom, in July 2025.
Since then, total volume of 1.4 million cubic meters of waste soil was removed from the construction site of Unit 5 of Beloyarsk NPP (General Designer and General Contractor for Unit 5 is Engineering Devision of State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom). The area cleared of soil is equivalent to almost 11 football pitches for international matches.
A distinctive feature of excavation works was dealing with rock deposits inherited from construction of previous power units. Weight of some of monolithic boulders exceeded 20 tons; to break such large boulders, open-pit mining machinery such as kinetic hammers, hydraulic hammers, RIF flotation machines were used.
“Preparation period activities will be completed by autumn 2026,” said Dmitry Priymak, Director for Beloyarsk NPP Unit 5 Construction - Director of ASE JSC Branch Office in Beloyarsk. “In parallel with this, we are planning to start building construction and erection base and ensure that everything is ready for drilling and blasting operations. Start of concrete operations on slab foundation of BN-1200M reactor building is scheduled for 2027”.
Alongside the site preparation for the construction of Unit 5, design documentation for further construction stages is being developed and survey works are nearing completion.
