Reinforcement of foundation slab of nuclear fuel storage building started at construction site of El-Dabaa NPP Unit 3

29.01.2026
Works for reinforcement of the foundation slab of nuclear fuel storage building of Unit 3 started at El-Dabaa construction site (the general designer and the general contractor is the Engineering Division of State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom). Reinforcement was preceded by construction of concrete mat and horizontal hydro-insulation, which is now completed in full scope. This allowed commencing construction of the building main structure.

The total scope of reinforcement of the foundation slab is over 1200 tons of re-bars. A team of over 50 people is involved in the work.

In the course of preparation for the work, processes of interaction with the construction participants were optimized, including monitoring and inspection procedures. This made it possible to reduce the number of check stages without downgrading the requirements for quality and safety, which will have a positive effect on the time of performance of construction and erection works and development of as-built documentation.

Concreting of the first section of the building foundation slab is schedule for March 2026.

For information:

The nuclear fuel storage building is an important element of the nuclear infrastructure of the Unit. It is intended for acceptance, temporary storage and preparation of fresh nuclear fuel for subsequent loading into the reactor.

El-Dabaa NPP is the first nuclear power plant in Egypt. It is being built in the city of El-Dabaa, Matrouh province, on the Mediterranean coast, approximately 300 km North-West of Cairo. The NPP consists of four power units, 1200 MW each, with the generation III+ VVER-1200 reactors (pressurized water reactors). This is the newest generation technology which has references and is already operating successfully. El-Dabaa NPP is being constructed in accordance with the package of contracts, which entered into force on December 11, 2017. In accordance with the contractual obligations, the Russian party will not only construct the power plant but will also supply nuclear fuel for the whole life cycle of the NPP and will provide assistance to the Egyptian partners in training of the personnel and support of operation and service of the plant during the first 10 years of its operation. Under a separate agreement, the Russian party will build special storages and will supply containers for storing spent nuclear fuel.
